Interior design is about creating (not copying) an environment that embraces the individual client and their personality, their lifestyle. This client lives in a Washington, DC rowhome and asked for a design Wake Up Call. She wanted the design to embrace her love for African culture, to reuse her leather furniture, update her kitchen, and WOW her friends when they gather. From the front door to the rear door, the makeover truly transformed her main level.

Scope of project:
*The foyer tile was replaced with wood flooring.
*Staircase was sanded, re-stained and painted
*Existing wood floors were sanded and re-stained
*All lighting was updated
*Window treatments were updated with shutters
*New area rug, tables, and slipcovers
*Kitchen cabinets were painted
*Kitchen island was replaced with new custom peninsula
*New Quartz countertops and porcelain tile backsplash
*Kitchen floor tile and cabinet hardware was updated
*Fresh grey paint with orange accent walls

The existing leather seating and oversized mirror were spruced up with a vibrant area rug and colorful pillows. A glass-top cocktail table was sourced to provide a little glam to the room while showcasing the rug pattern. One way to create interest in a long room is to place a console table on one end of the sofa, in lieu of an end table. The scale of the console table allows for an opportunity to display decorative items that tie in to the room’s decor.

The kitchen had 2 different color cabinetry and a freestanding island that impeded flow into the kitchen. By creating a peninsula, the opening to the kitchen widened and was more functional. The cabinets were refinished all one color and complements the bold kitchen backsplash. This space is a true reflection of the homeowner in every way!

The new modern shutters brighten up the whole room! The client’s collection of African decor fits right in with the her love for sparkle and glam- the gilded chandelier is a showpiece with its hand-applied gold leaf paint on three tiers of a quatrefoil fixture. The tapered wall sconces that flank the mirror freshen up the space and add accent lighting for a moody feel in the evenings.
